Smartwatches have been steadily gaining steam in the technology realm for the last few years and now it seems these wearable devices are beginning to find their place in the automotive world. Many brands have been developing apps that are compatible with these watches, allowing car owners to stay connected with their car even when they're away from the vehicle. A new venture for automakers, this technology could change the industry as we know it; however, it's still currently foreign to many car owners. To get each one onboard with what's to come, we've decided to breakdown the smartwatch apps, providing insight on how they works and their exceptional features.
How They Work

Most up-and-coming smartwatch technology created by car manufacturers is accessible through an app, which can be downloaded to a user's smartphone. Typically, the user must then connect the smartwatch to the smartphone using Bluetooth and a cellular connection in order to take advantage of the app's functions. From here, users can control select in-car features while away from the vehicle, with just the press of a button or through voice activation.
What They Do

Automakers are currently searching for innovative ways to utilize smartwatch apps, and as of now, key functions available on most apps include remote start, the ability to lock and unlock doors, a car finder tool, remote flash lights and call roadside assistance. Each of these features are offered on Hyundai's Blue Link app; however, other apps soon-to-be-available could come with fuel/battery charge notifications, remote climate control and navigation input. Additionally, smartwatches may eventually come with remote valet, which would work with autonomous cars, so drivers won't have to park their vehicles or retrieve them from the parking lot. The car will park itself or come to them by just selecting a function on their smartwatch.
Why They're Beneficial

The advantages of using a smartwatch to connect with your car are endless. It will forever change the way we interact with our vehicles, giving us the ability to access information while on the go. With the ability to lock/unlock doors and start the engine remotely, you can eliminate unnecessary trips to the car and allow others to enter the vehicle without stepping away from what you're currently doing. Finding your car in a crowded parking lot will also never be a problem again, making trips to the mall a breeze.
Several smartwatch apps are scheduled to launch in the near future, including Hyundai's Blue Link app. Arriving during the first quarter of 2015, the smartwatch app will be available to Android Wear users through Google Play and compatible with all Blue Link-equipped models.
