How Often Should You Replace Your Windshield Wipers?

Your windshield wipers should be replaced every six to 12 months. Since that is a large window of time, you're almost always better off checking your windshield wipers regularly for signs of wear and tear. Windshield wipers can last as long as a year, but you are far more likely to need replacements before then. With that being said, let's take a look at signs that your windshield wipers need to be replaced.

Damaged Rubber Blades

The rubber blades on your windshield wipers act as squeegees that wipe away water, snow, ice, and anything else that could impair your vision when you drive. Unfortunately, they are also very vulnerable to damage.

Your wiper blades should be checked at least once a month. If they are rough to the touch or you see cracks or gouges in the rubber, they should be replaced.

Squeaky Wipers

If your wipers are squeaking or squealing when they're being used, they should be replaced if only to preserve your sanity. Yes, you might be able to get some use out of squeaky windshield wipers, but you'll have to listen to what sounds like nails on a chalkboard whenever you have to drive on a rainy day.

Streaks On Your Windshield

Healthy windshield wipers should leave your windshield looking practically spotless. On the other hand, older wipers tend to leave streaks when they're used. This is more of a minor annoyance most of the time, but it will worsen as time goes on. If you see these streaks, it's best to replace your windshield wipers while you can still see through your windshield.

Rusted Metal

Finally, check the metal arms and joints of your windshield wipers for signs of rust. Corrosion won't impair your visibility when you drive, but too much could be an indicator that your windshield wipers will break soon. Since you don't want that to happen on the highway during a thunderstorm, buy replacement wipers sooner rather than later.
